Spend a day exploring historical Charleston and check out Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. Fort Sumter was built following the War of 1812 to help protect the Southern Coast from attack and invasion. Construction started in 1829 and wasn’t finished by 1861, when a battle at Fort Sumter became the start of the American Civil War. A Union army general and his garrison were holed up in the fort and refused the calls to evacuate the fort by the Confederacy. In January 1861, President Lincoln sent a supply boat to the fort to try and resupply the army there when the Confederate Army fired on the supply ship. Thus the Civil War was started. Various skirmishes happened throughout the Civil War at Fort Sumter, it was captured by the Confederacy in spring of 1861, only to have the Union try to take it back in 1863 until the end of the war. Fort Sumter is now a national monument and tourists frequently visit it to learn about the Civil War and the start of the civil war.
