With its old history, there is no shortage of historical sights and stories in downtown Charleston. The city’s rich legacy includes two battles during the American Revolution, the start of the Civil War, a massive Earthquake and a hurricane. Their Civil War walking tour will take you to some memorable places that were important during the Civil War. The Civil War actually started at Fort Sumter in the middle of Charleston Harbor. President Lincoln had sent ships to the fort to resupply an army garrison stationed there. Confederate troops bombarded the fort and the ships thus starting the Civil War. The Civil War walking tour will take you on a two-hour trip to see St. Phillips Cemetery where John C. Calhoun is buried, the blockade runners and the High Battery where troops were stationed. The tour concludes with a tour of the Powder Magazine, the oldest surviving building in South Carolina, where troops from the Revolution and Civil war kept their gunpowder and supplies. Admission for the tour is $12 for children and $22 for adults. Tours are held on Mondays at 10:30 a.m., Saturdays at 11 a.m., and Sundays at 11:30 a.m.

Learn all about Charleston and the Civil War with this fun and educational walking tour. Get a real feel for Charleston’s history when you stay at a historic Charleston hotel like the Andrew Pinckney Inn.
