There are many unique things to do in Charleston. If you are looking for a nice getaway from the city, consider taking a day trip to the historic and unspoiled Wadmalaw Island in South Carolina’s low country to visit the Charleston Tea Plantation. Owned by Bigelow Tea, the Charleston Tea Plantation is known as the only tea plantation in the US. You can experience the beauty and Southern charm of the tea plantation by taking a trolley tour through the 127 acre farm. The tour is centered around the horticultural aspect of the Plantation and allows you to see the over 320 varieties of tea plants in the various growth stages. The trolley driver provides a fun and educational experience by sharing their knowledge on the history of the Plantation and the production of the tea. Be sure to help yourself to some American Classic Tea to take with you on the trolley ride! Tickets for the trolley tour are $10 for 12 years and up and $5 for children under 12. Tours generally last around 35 to 40 minutes and run throughout the day.
After your trolley tour, be sure to take the time to take the brief factory tour where you can see up close how the plants are used to produce the tea. During the peak season, you may also get to see all the stages of the production process. The Bigelows themselves will be your guide (through flat screen TVs) through a glass tourway that overlooks the factory. If you are an avid tea drinker, you will enjoy getting to learn about the different processes to produce different types of teas. The factory tour is free and you are not required to take the trolley tour in order to go on the factory tour.
Before you leave, head to the Plantation Gift Shop where you can purchase some tea and other unique gifts to take home or just help yourself to another cup of complimentary iced American Classic Tea to take on the road with you.
